Statement of the KNPP and KNU Summit meeting

22 Jul 2006

Top leaders of the Karenni National Progressive Party (KNPP) and The Karen National Union (KNU) held a meeting in one of the liberated areas on 19-7-2006. At this meeting, the repressive military offensive of the SPDC troops against the Karenni and Karen people wantonly killing them and the internal and international situation were considered and studied. After which the following statement was issued.

(1) Both parties considered that as the SPDC is refusing to settle the political problems inside the country (Burma), by political means, the political situation has continued to become more tense. The economic situation is at its worse and the overall situation rather grave.

(2) At the time that the country is at its worst politically, the SPDC today waged cruel military offensive over the Karenni and Karen people. Such military offensive which caused not only the native people to become people with no status but also made the situation to become more worse.

(3) Strongly demand the ceasing of constructing the mega dam project with the capital investment from some countries abroad in the Salween river, which flows through the Karenni and Karen areas. Currently, such project will not bring much benefit to Burma, but will cause much damage to the livelihood of the native people living in the area. Their economy, security and the environment.

(4) Urged the Ethnic nationalities, the people and the political parties representing the people to carry on the struggle with unity to gaining true democracy and establishing a federal union until the objective is achieved.

(5) For the emergence of tri-partite dialogue, seriously called for the international governments, non-governmental organization and the people to pressuring the SPDC bringing change to Burma.

(6) Called for the SPDC to cease its repressive military offensive against the ethnic nationalities soonest, to soonly release Daw Aung San Su kyi, U Tin Oo, Khun Tun Oo and all political prisoners from detention unconditionally. To abrogate the repressive unlawful acts against the people and conduct the essential tri-partite dialogue as soon as possible.
